Power Glass

– Coffee Grinder & Cold-Brew-Coffee Dripper

Power Glass is an electronic coffee grinder with an hourglass design, featuring an additional central module for making cold brew coffee. This design concept was developed as part of the Master’s module Design Practice 1, which focused on designing unconventional product interactions in the domestic sphere. The aim, therefore, was specifically to design objects whose primary function is not triggered by conventional buttons or touchscreens, but by alternative forms of interaction.

To grind the coffee beans, the grinder must be placed in the designated holder with a power connection, where it is activated by turning it around. The switch on the outside of the grinder module is used solely to set the desired grind size. The concept requires that the grinding mechanism either operates both ways or remains stationary inside the grinder when turned over.

Once the grinding process is complete, the powder can be poured into the lower section of the second central module. This section operates without any electronic assistance. To make cold brew coffee, ice is then placed in the upper glass, which slowly trickles through the dripper’s filter as it melts. The hourglass motif is thus applied equally to both functions of the object.
