ur:base

– The new approach to passenger transportation

As part of the Master’s module Design Practice 2, with the theme Routes & Routines, we explored the topic of transition of passenger transportation as part of a five-person group project. Specifically, we asked ourselves: How can we promote and establish a sustainable transport culture within society, whilst ensuring that the transport environment is shared more equitably among all road users?

The overall concept of ur:base is extremely comprehensive and, in addition to the renderings shown here, also includes the design of an app and a corporate identity. Target audience and market analyses were carried out and a suitable advertising concept was developed. Further details about the project and about my own design process can be found on a separate website. The project participants are: Sofia Gerstlacher, Julian Kühme, Nico Rützel, Helena Strauch-Stoll and Wenting Zhang

My project partner Sofia Gerstlacher was invited by the industry association “Wir gestalten Dresden” to present the mobility concept of ur:base at Cosmo Wissenschaftsforum This took place on March 1, 2023, as part of the event “Architecture Meets Design” .

As we worked together to develop and refine our project, we first had extensive discussions about community, culture, and visibility. As the project progressed, a structured yet dynamic division of tasks emerged within our group, and each member’s progress was presented to the group and coordinated during regular meetings.

Together with my project partner Julian Kühme, my primary focus was on the product design aspect of the project. In addition to creating the CAD models of our so-called Mobility Hubs (see cover image), my main task was to develop and design a bike rack with a built-in security lock, which can be used through the ur:base-App. bedient wird.

The bicycle parking spaces are one of the most important basic elements of our Mobility Hubs. On the one hand, they serve a practical purpose for cyclists, but they also play a symbolic role. The Mobility Hubs are intended to illustrate that where a single car would normally park in a public space, there is easily enough room for up to four bicycles and an entire bike shelter.
