Deepfakes (Video Essay)

– The Role of Deepfakes in Media, Art, and Culture

This video essay on deepfakes was produced in 2021 in collaboration with Jessica Lasch and Victoria Itter. The project was preceded by extensive research into the social relevance, technical background and potential for conflict associated with the topic. However, in contrast to the largely justified negative coverage of deepfakes, the video was deliberately designed to focus primarily on the cultural potential of the technology.

To discuss the creative and strategic potential of deepfakes, we looked at examples from the film industry, the art world and meme culture, and ventured a prediction as to how the widespread use of this technology might influence our engagement with audiovisual media in the future.

This work was produced as part of the sixth-semester Bachelor’s module Media criticism. The module focused on design research, academic writing and the exploratory use of modern communication technologies.

A year later, the video essay became part of the exhibition „Outside the Bounding Box – Young designers' perspectives on artificial intelligence“.
